He is consider a hero of the Texas War of Independence, and was awarded a League and a Labor (4,000 and 400 acres), of land for his war service to the new Republic of Texas. It was within this awarded land that Elisha established Turner’s Point, (later Poetry), Texas.
Research
Turners Point grew to be a considerable place, having several business and churches, including a three story hotel and saloon or dance hall. A town name including the word Point, at that time in Texas, indicated that it had cattle quartering facilities. It was the largest way stop on the stagecoach route between Dallas and Shreveport. The Town was destroyed by tornado, in the 1870s and rebuilt 1/2 mile east. In the 1890’s it was destroyed by fire. And again in the 1920’s was damaged by a tornado.

The demise of Poetry was due to a railroad built six miles south, running through the town of Kaufman, However, today at the beginning of the 21st Century, Poetry is again growing as residential expansion from Dallas moves in.
